Harry sat on the hearth rug with his back against the couch, the flickering fire the only light in the room. Duchess was curled up beside him with her head on his thigh, watching her puppies as they crawled over his legs. Cupping his hands around the mug of hot chocolate the house-elf had brought him, Harry still couldn't seem to get warm. He thought about Summoning a blanket, but didn't have the heart to disturb the babies. A shiver ran through Harry and Duchess lifted her head to look up at him.

"It's okay," Harry told her softly, reaching slowly to pet her head.

Duchess climbed up on his lap and curled up there, making Harry smile. He set his mug down, running his fingers down the soft coat. Harry was proud that Duchess trusted him enough now to allow him to brush her. The dogs were a warm presence that helped keep his loneliness manageable, even though Harry knew it shouldn't be a problem. After all, he'd been alone most of his life, Harry reasoned, this year had no business hurting more than the others had. It wasn't Ron and Hermione's fault that they wanted to spend some time alone, nor was it their faulth that Snape's rejection of Harry's friendship had devastated him.

Harry laid his head back on the cushion, wrapping his arms around him as he continued to shiver. He should really get up and eat something, then try to sleep. Closing his eyes, Harry groaned as he tried to will his body to move. If he went to sleep now, he was sure to have more nightmares, but he felt like he was being dragged under. As seemed to happen a lot lately, Harry felt he was slowly drowning.

Harry shook with cold, pulling the thin blanket tighter around him . His cupboard didn't get much heat when the door was shut, but he couldn't open it with Dudley's party going on. He could hear the clink of silverware, the laughter of Dudley's friends as they played party games, and the pop of the Christmas crackers. There was a large, beautifully decorated tree in the sitting room that Harry wasn't allowed to touch and a pile of gaily wrapped presents underneath it that didn't have his name on.

Harry groaned and struggled to wake up, but he was shivering so hard all he could do was curl up into a ball.

"Get up, boy!"

Uncle Vernon's voice shattered Harry's sleep.

"Go out and get the snow off my car, I need to leave for work!"

Harry blinked his eyes rapidly, trying to get them to stay open as he stumbled out of bed. Shaving his feet into the oversized trainers, Harry stepped out into the snow. It was all he could do to shuffle his feet along the ground. Impulsively, Harry lifted his face and stuck out his tongue, to catch snowflakes as he'd seen Dudley do.

The sound of a dog barking jolted Harry and his eyes flew open to see Ripper running right at him. Paralyzed with fear, Harry could only watch at the dog snarled and launched itself at it, transforming into Nagini. Harry could only scream in terror—

A pop preceded the Head house-elf's arrival. "Master Snape?"

Severus set down his quill and looked up with a scowl. "Yes, Ledo?"

"Jetty is finding an animal in the castle, Headmaster!" The normally unflappable Ledo wrung his hands. "He is not getting it to go out!"

Although temped to tell Ledo to deal with the errant squirrel himself, Severus stood as he smothered a sigh. The house-elves had more free time than usual with the majority of students gone, he knew, eyeing the red, white, and green Christmas cake, the chocolate Yule Log, and the basket of biscuits brought up to his office for tea. They loved to cook, but if something upset them, they might burn his Christmas goose, and that wouldn't do.

"Take me to where this ferocious animal is," Severus told Ledo, moving to follow him out the door.

Perhaps Severus would go by Potter's room as the young man had failed to show up for dinner again this evening.

*hugs* Thank you.
Oh, poor Harry, that was a terrible nightmare...

I must confess that I LOL when I read the elf's description of our lovely Duchess, and I sincerely hope that Severus hurries up and rescues Harry from the throes of that awful dream... This may end up being the break they need to finally understand one another *fingers crossed*.

Wonderful use of the prompts here, lily. You managed to use so many of them in such a seamless way that I was left seriously impressed. :D
Thank you so much for your lovely comment! :)
Two birds, one stone. This should be interesting!
LOL! :)
Oh no! Duchess is going to be caught. Poor Harry he is trapped in his own mind and doesn't even realize it is a friendly pup that is barking at him. Got to love Mama's no matter how many legs they have.
Yes, indeed - Mamas are very protective!
