Summary: After his recovery and acquittal, Headmaster Snape wants to prove he is qualified to do the job on his own merit. He distances himself from the one person who has been constantly at his side since the Battle of Hogwarts and his staunchest supporter, Harry Potter.
A/N: This drabble follows The Rescue, The Escape, The Conundrum, and The Summons.

Lighting the Christmas candle in the window, its flame flickering hesitantly before flaring brightly, Severus felt inexplicably nervous as he waited for Potter to arrive. Dinner had been a quiet meal with Potter showing up and sitting in the seat furthest away from him. Covertly watching the boy, Severus had noted that he did more pushing of his food around the plate than eating it. Something was definitely off and Severus was going to get to the bottom of it.

A soft bell alerted Severus that Potter was on his way up and Severus positioned himself alongside his desk, arms folded across his chest. A tap on the door proceeded Potter's entrance into the room. The boy was still wearing his tight denims and jumper. Severus' body responded to the sight in a most inappropriate way, making Severus scowl. Potter stopped immediately when he saw the look on Severus' face, his own expression closing.

"You wanted to see me, Headmaster."

Potter's voce was neutral as he stopped beside in front of his desk. This close Severus could see how drawn Potter's face looked, the way his glasses hid his shadowed eyes, and something that Severus just couldn't put his finger on. His posture seemed to scream secrecy, but Potter's face was a blank mask. For some reason, that infuriated Severus more than open defiance would have.

"Mr. Potter, I am concerned that your behavior seems…restless." Severus strove to keep his voice even. "Perhaps you are seeking some kind of diversion?"

Potter continued to look at him without blinking. "I've had enough diversions to last a lifetime, Headmaster, I'm just—relaxing."

"Relaxing?" Severus' lips curled into a sneer, hating the lack of reaction. "You've been left to your own designs by your two minders who found it inconvenient to have you around while they further their carnal knowledge!" Something flickered in the depths of Potter's eyes. "You're pouting like a—"

"I am not pouting!" Potter snapped back, a bit of the fire Severus remembered erupting. "It's just better this way!"

There was a strange inflection on the last sentence that sounded a chord inside Severus, but he pushed that aside as he stepped closer. "Whatever it is that you are up to, Potter, let this serve as your warning: I will find out what it is and you will answer to me for it!"

"Why didn't you go back to ignoring me?" Harry ground out. "You're good at that."

"Dismissed, Potter!" Severus snapped, his chest heaving as he watched Potter storm out.

Moving to the window, Severus stood looking out over the Christmas candle. Why was it that they couldn't interact for five minutes without their tempers flaring?

Yes, Potter is plotting against him with fluffy dogs who are already master spies and full of ambition to become the next dark dog - eh lord :)
Honestly Severus, you should do something about that PTSS induced paranoia of yours.. I hope his last musing will lead to some self reflection.
LMAO! I think you are spot on with Severus' paranoia! Especially when Harry is involved! :)

♥ Thanks, bb - you are too good to me!
Silly boys. They just need to talk and then all the misunderstandings will be fixed. *nods*
Lovely installment, bb!
*hugs you* You are so right!

&hearts: Thank you, bb!
*pets them both* Poor boys-so much pain and suffering. FIX IT! please?
Thank you for sharing!
*hugs* I'll see what I can do! :)
Ah, Severus. Always suspicious. And poor Harry, always on the defensive. *snuggles them both* Loving this series.
Thank you so much! :)
Oops! Severus definitely didn't handle their encounter very well. He should have known that the horrors of the war have changed Harry fundamentally and that their past ways of interacting with one another wouldn't work like they used to. Riling a teenager who hates him might work to get a rise out of him, but it only creates unpleasant misunderstandings when he's addressing a disheartened veteran who is secretly in love with him...

I hope Severus manages to make this better, somehow, although I have the terrible suspicion that he hasn't figured out the true nature of Harry's feelings towards him yet and he won't be able to fix their fundamental problems in this story-line until he understands that much.

Lovely addition to this plot, lily. I look forwards to the next instalment. :)
Severus has always been overly suspicious where Harry is concerned - he wants to find bad things so he doesn't give in to his softer feelings.

♥ Thank you!
Poor Harry and Severus. Fighting in 5 minutes, could it be because that is the only outlet they will allow themselves?
I do like the little details you are throwing in there, like how Harry isn't really eating, how Severus is ignoring tiny things he doesn't understand just yet.
Well done.
Thank you so much!
