Summary: Harry's return to Hogwarts to complete his education after the War hasn't gone the way he'd planned.
A/N: This drabble follows The Rescue.

Harry slipped out of the kitchens, carefully balancing two bowls and a plate with a chicken sandwich in his hands. Just before he'd gone out the door, he'd popped one of the small candy canes the house-elves had into his mouth. He hoped the peppermint would settle his upset stomach. Harry hoped he didn't run into anyone as he hadn't bothered to thrown a robe over his jumper and sleep pants. Trudging up the stairs, Harry blinked back the blurriness in his eyes. The nightmares had been bad this week and he was almost afraid to try to sleep again.

"In the future, Mr. Potter, you will eat your food during set meal times along with rest of the castle occupants and not by sneaking into the kitchens at two in the morning."

Harry stopped abruptly as Headmaster Snape materialized from the shadows, the silky voice sending a shiver down Harry's spine. "I'm sorry, sir. I guess I lost track of time and missed dinner. It won't happen again." He spoke around the candy cane.

Snape stepped closer and Harry was careful to keep his eyes focused on the man's throat. For some reason, the thought of seeing Snape's disapproving sneer was something Harry couldn't take at the moment. He needed to get back to feed Duchess so that she could take care of her puppies.

"Boiled chicken, scrambled eggs, and a sandwich?" Snape observed. "Unusual choices for a midnight snack."

Harry watched the muscles in Snape's throat move as he spoke, the bobbing of his Adam's apple above the high collar of his robes. The movement made something curl in Harry's abdomen.

"Just something simple, sir," Harry said, stepping back. "I'm sorry I bothered you!"

Harry turned and fled to his room, where Duchess welcomed him with unbridled joy.
