Summary: Harry's return to Hogwarts to complete his education after the War hasn't gone the way he'd planned.

A soft whimper drew Harry down a darkening alley in Hogsmeade. It was the whimper of someone or something hurt and the needy sound sliced right through Harry. Casting a silent Lumos, Harry searched through the dust bins and boxes until a pair of dark eyes stared up at him from a filthy box. A little dog watched him warily, the whimpering coming from deeper inside the box.

"Easy," Harry whispered, carefully moving aside the top flap.

Three tiny pairs of eyes stared at him. Puppies, dirty, emaciated, and shivering in the cold. One of them whimpered again and, without a second thought, Harry pulled off his cloak. Gathering the dogs carefully in his arms, Harry ran for Hogwarts.

He managed to catch Hagrid before he left for his Christmas in France and Harry now hurried up to his room, Hagrid's blistering tirade about animal abusers still ringing in his ears. Settling the dogs in the shallow box Hagrid had given him, Harry prepared a small meal for mum. Watching the dog cautiously take a bite, Harry sat back on his haunches. Duchess, as Hagrid had christened her, paused as if waiting for a blow, before taking another. The action cut through Harry, throwing him back to his own childhood.

Shaking off the memory, Harry washed each of the puppies and then Duchess, leaving food and water in the box as he moved to collapse on the couch. It was a good thing that he had his own room as an eighth-year student and that the corridors had been clear. It wouldn't do to have the Headmaster find out he'd smuggled them in.

Not that Snape had spoken to him since his acquittal. Perhaps he was having as hard a time adjusting to life after the war as Harry was.
