Summary: Late night conversations with the portraits in the Headmaster's office.

Severus Snape sat wearily in his chair, staring blankly into the flickering fire, his hand curled around a steaming mug of tea. His fingers were still icy from his foray into the Forest of Dean.

"Headmaster Snape?"

The quiet voice carried the ring of authority and Severus' head snapped-up, focusing on an ancient portrait in a gilded frame.

"Lord Gryffindor."

"Ever wary, Severus," a second, more familiar, voice cajoled him.

"Lord Slytherin." Severus relaxed; he knew the portrait of Salazar Slytherin.

"Thank you, young man," Gryffindor's portrait said. "Your assistance to my heir is appreciated."

Severus reveled in the praise.

I hope that he had something to help him through that time. But, as much as JKR hates Snape, I imagine she'd have made him suffer. I'm glad he's got people like you writing things like this! :D

Oh, very nice. I was always surprised that JKR didn't mention portraits of the founds in the headmaster's office. Because it makes absolute sense that they'd be there.
